REVIEWS AND ROAD TESTS
Finishing touches
September 2001 will be remember as the month when… the Murciйlago was launched ! This supercar will supercede the Diablo, after 10 years on the market. For 2002, two very surprising new colors will highlight the Diablo’s last year: Elios Gold and Ekilpsis Brown. Yes, it’s right, we’re back into the 70’s! The Diablo ’ s driving position is satisfactory despite a marked offset between the steering axle and the pedals. Certain controls seem to have been mass-produced while some details reveal handcrafted manufacturing. Moreover, visibility is atrocious. Fortunately, the dashboard houses complete and readable instrumentation.Diablo offers powerful gear exchanges to fully exploit the resources available to the driver. The V12 growls roughly, and both acceleration and pick up will throw you far back into your seat. This surge of power can only be stopped by changing gears with an iron fist, not to mention an equally strong calf to operate the clutch. Traffic and short trips on busy streets are to be avoided, since visibility is virtually nil. The steering faithfully transmits road imperfections, and the suspension will roughen up passengers on even the slightest bumps. Fortunately, the Diablo ’ s hydraulic control increases ground clearance by 45 mm.
To truly appreciate the Diablo, one needs the desire and the means to control it, without which it ’ s not much fun.
